Windsor’s Muslim community ends Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr celebrations

April 14, 2024

Members of Windsor’s Muslim community gathered Saturday to celebrate Eid Al-Fitr, a festival marking the end of a month of dawn-to-dusk fasting for Ramadan.

The day of celebrations held at the Rose City Islamic Centre signified the “breaking of the fast” and included bouncy castles, face painting, henna tattoos and a bustling bazaar.

However, although Eid Al-Fitr — Eid is the Arabic word for “celebration” — marks a “special day” for the Muslim community, Imam Muhammad Abuelezz said this year’s festivities held a different meaning for many.

“Our hearts are sad and in pain about what is happening in Gaza,” said Abuelezz, who is also the manager of the Rose City Islamic Centre.
