President-Executive Message – May 2023

Reflecting on our Masajid post-Ramadan

Two years ago, there were debates and worries in the community about the closure of masajid during covid. Some were concerned, perhaps legitimately, that some Muslims would simply become accustomed to the idea of not going to the mosque.

On our first full Ramadan out of the pandemic, our masajid filled up to the walls. The level of commitment shown in every city far exceeded the pre covid numbers. This is a sign of an ummah awakening and regaining its place inshaAllah. Year-upon-year, our masajid are growing, activities are expanding, and the community is maturing in many ways. For this we are grateful to Allah subhanahu wa tala.

As custodians of the community’s institutions, it is our responsibility to reflect on our efforts during Ramadan and consider how we can enhance the experiences of our community. We must assist the community in maintaining the sense of spirituality and purpose attained during Ramadan.

The masajid of Allah are to be visited & maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, give zakah, and do not fear except Allah, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided.”

(Quran 9:18)

A significant aspect of Ramadan at the masjid is that it is a holistic family affair. Religious educational services must cater to the needs of the entire family. Our strengthened religious commitment should nurture a spirit of revival that strengthens our faith, leads us to serve both our Muslim and broader Canadian communities, and allows us to share the true message of our deen.

Another important opportunity ahead of us is finding ways to open our masajid to our neighbors, where we can foster understanding of our faith and collaborate to overcome prejudice and social challenges. We need to find innovative approaches to da’wah and the propagation of the authentic message of Islam.

None of the above comes easily, and I call on your support and vibrant engagement in all the masajid of our community to make this a reality inshaAllah.

As a final reflection, Eid serves as a communal celebration of our spiritual commitments and accomplishments during the holy month. Unfortunately, the CRA’s attempt to define religious activities for our community has cast a negative shadow. MAC is challenging this in court and will continue insisting on our right to practice our deen in all its forms, including the religious celebration of Eid.  It’s our shared duty as a community to make sure that every member experiences the happiness and connection Eid brings, thereby nurturing their spirituality and sense of community all year round.

In these days between Ramadan and Hajj, I ask Allah to grant us the ability to serve Him and His people.

Your Brother,

Abdullatif Bakbak MAC President-Executive
